Steven Hoober talking at Mobile Widget Camp Austin, 7 September 2008

Alison and I are in the airport on the way back from the barcamp-inspired event. A lot of other participants were in town for some OMTP BONDI working group meeting, so a variety of interesting mobile people were there from all over the world, and were in a very collaborative, and standards-centric mindset.

Since it was all around development, I expected to be booed and discounted, if anyone even stuck around when I started talking. But in fact all the wind was knocked from my sails by everyone agreeing with me. Extra chairs were brought in for the afternoon sessions on UX (I followed Cathy Edwards). Presentations on how to develop for specific platforms had slides that looked like I made them, covering the reasons mobile is unique and important, and how UX concerns have to be addressed.

I pretty much could not be more pleased with the event. It renewed my faith in humanity.

Everyone’s slides should be posted at the barcamp site above, eventually, but if you want to see what I said, check out the presentation here:

Alison Hoober with her new N95 8GB she just won at Mobile Widget Camp Austin, 7 September 2008
A whole breakout room was set aside for folks to go code widgets, based on all the neat stuff they were learning at the conference. And… more or less no one did it. So the last thing before the drinking and over-eating was a demo of some emerging widget technologies and a free discussion of widget ideas.

Alison (our office manager, general assistant and my wife) proposed a detailed use case for an idle-screen alarm clock widget. And her idea won. Which garnered her a new Nokia N95 8GB. Really.

I’m done with my travel for now, but Barbara is going to be speaking at Mobile Web Megatrends um, maybe right now, and Mobile Web Strategies on the 9th so be sure to look for her if you are attending either of those.

And don’t forget to come and talk about all of this in person at the first North American conference on mobile design, Design for Mobile, September 22nd and 23rd right here in Lawrence, KS.
